Keep Tucson Together
Brief Writing for Asylum Seekers w/a Pro Bono Immigration Clinic in Tucson, Arizona
You will be working on briefs for asylum seekers appearing before difficult judges in the Tucson Immigration Court.
Posted August 4, 2020
Background & Context
*now seeking immigration lawyers only*
We are a small organization (keeptucsontogether.org), with just a few lawyers volunteering with us, none of whom have the time to write briefs. The brief-writing work falls to our legal assistants and volunteers, none of whom have much experience with brief-writing, and so our briefs end up being poorly written. Well-written briefs by knowledgeable lawyers would make a huge difference for our clients!
All of our legal services are provided completely for free, and we are a part of the larger organization of No More Deaths/No Mas Muertes (nomoredeaths.org).
Immediate Problem
At the moment, there are a couple of law students who write briefs, but neither of them have much experience. We use some basic templates we have created. We most frequently need briefs written for people who fear cartel violence in Mexico, and we also have clients who are fleeing political persecution in Cuba, Central America, and South America, and clients who are LGBTQ+.
Work & Deliverables
We have a regular need for briefs to submit in immigration court.
Preparation Phase
- An email will be sent to you containing documents and information about the case you will be working
Collaboration Phase
- Write a brief based on the information provided in the email.
Wrap Up
- Deliver final brief to our asylum coordinator's email.
