Assist Borrowers with Student Debt Relief
Empower student loan borrowers by helping them navigate the student loan system.
Posted September 18, 2024
Background & Context
Between September and November, the Student Debt Crisis Center (SDCC) and Civic Nation will host a series of virtual workshops focused on providing much-needed guidance on student loans and repayment options in response to the ongoing SAVE litigation and administrative forbearances– and we need your help to assist as many folks as possible.
This series is designed to equip folks with up-to-date information and personalized assistance needed to make informed decisions about their loans. We will be hosting workshops about student loans immediately followed by breakout sessions for borrowers to attend based on the initial information that they provide us.
Following each workshop, we’ll provide one-on-one assistance for borrowers who have lingering questions, need help completing applications, or just need some personalized guidance.
To make this initiative a success, we’re looking for volunteer lawyers to help borrowers in real-time manage their return-to-repayment options.
Most lawyers have been through the student loan maze themselves and know all about the complexities that come with it. Plus, they're really good at understanding complicated systems and rules, so they can explain things in a way that's easy to understand for borrowers. We're not looking for legal advice - our main focus is to give clear and accurate explanations of loan terms and processes. What we really want is to offer guidance and support, especially when it comes to return-to-repayment options and borrower rights.
Work & Deliverables
Pre-Clinic Training: Before assisting borrowers, you will participate in a one-hour, virtual training on student loans. This will inform volunteers on updates to the current student loan environment and steps to take with borrowers to help them navigate their current student loan standing and next steps.
One-on-one Borrower Support: After training, volunteers will offer their availability for 1:1 virtual borrower support. These 1:1 sessions will be scheduled based on your listed availability and last 15-30 minutes, depending on a borrower's needs. During the session, volunteers will provide assistance for borrowers who have completed a Student Debt Clinic and still have lingering questions, need help completing applications, or just need some personalized guidance.
Preparation Phase
- Introductory email with training dates.
- Fill out volunteer assessment form.
- Attend virtual training session.

Collaboration Phase
