Remotely Help Asylum-Seekers Prepare for Credible Fear Interviews
A few hours of preparation can make a tremendous difference in helping clients access protection
Posted August 19, 2021
Background & Context
As we have seen across the news this summer, an increasing number of families and individuals are fleeing from violence in their home countries and seeking asylum in the United States. This includes individuals from conflict torn countries and those facing dire security situations, such as Venezuela, Nicaragua and Haiti. Upon arrival at the U.S.-Mexico border, these individuals are detained by the U.S. government and then sent to one of many detention centers throughout the United States, including the ICE detention center located in Aurora, Colorado. Before they can begin asylum proceedings, each individual must demonstrate a credible fear of persecution in an interview with an asylum officer. This interview is an important step in the pathway to seeking asylum and lasting protection in the United States. RMIAN is looking for pro bono attorneys to help asylum-seekers prepare for their interviews by orienting individuals on the process and what to expect.
Work & Deliverables
RMIAN has a large need for pro bono attorneys to help individuals prepare for their credible fear interviews (CFIs). This is a limited scope opportunity for attorneys to meet with clients, explain the process, and assist them in preparing for their CFIs. Attorneys are not required to enter an appearance on the case. This opportunity is completely remote- CFI preps can be handled telephonically or by video conference.
